After nearly four decades working in a local authority, making the leap to the private sector was a significant decision—and not one I took lightly. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how different the environment would be. But one year into my journey at Gallagher, I can confidently say it’s been one of the most rewarding transitions of my career.

From Public to Private: A New Chapter

Joining Gallagher after 38 years in the public sector came with its fair share of apprehension. Would the pace be different? Would the culture align with my values? What I discovered was a team of professionals, many with similar backgrounds, who welcomed me warmly and helped me navigate the shift with empathy and encouragement.

The transition has been smoother than I imagined, and I’ve found that the private sector, particularly at Gallagher, shares many of the same values I held dear in public service: integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to making a difference.

Living the Gallagher Way

One of the most striking aspects of my first year has been experiencing Gallagher’s culture first-hand. The Gallagher Way isn’t just a set of principles; it’s something we live and breathe. From day one, I saw how deeply embedded the client-first mindset is, and how much emphasis is placed on delivering tailored, thoughtful solutions.

The “One Team” approach is more than a slogan. It’s a daily reality, and being part of such a cohesive, purpose-driven team has been both inspiring and energising.

Support That Makes a Difference

What truly stands out is the level of support I’ve received, not just professionally, but personally. Whether it’s training, mentoring, or simply a colleague checking in, there’s a genuine culture of care here. I’ve built strong connections in a short time, and I always feel empowered to ask questions, share ideas, and grow.

Working part-time has also allowed me to achieve a healthier work-life balance, something I deeply value at this stage in my career. I’m grateful to my manager, Paul, and the wider team for fostering an environment where flexibility and wellbeing are prioritised.

Highlights from an Incredible Year

Reflecting on the past 12 months, a few standout moments come to mind:

  • Welcoming new clients to the Public Sector team and exploring innovative partnership opportunities.

  • Reconnecting with former local authority colleagues and strengthening those relationships.

  • Attending sector-specific events that offered valuable networking and learning experiences.

  • Having the honour of judging and presenting a Risk Award at the ALARM National Conference.

  • Witnessing the power of collaboration across teams, where challenges are met with creativity and shared purpose.

Looking Ahead

This first year has been one of growth, learning, and meaningful connection. I’m excited about what lies ahead and look forward to continuing this journey with Gallagher—contributing to our clients’ success and supporting colleagues along the way.
