My name is Nigel, and I am an HBCU graduate who has found a home at Gallagher. As we approach Black History Month 2025, with the theme of 'African Americans & Labor,' I can't help but reflect on my personal journey in the workforce and how it has led me to where I am today. Growing up, I learned the value of hard work through manual labor, which instilled in me a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed. Now, as a part of the Gallagher family, I am excited to share my experiences and insights with you.

Embracing my Heritage through Hard Work

As a young African American, I worked a lot of manual labor. It started in my Grandpa's yard, other people's yards and farms – even ministry work. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and the value of hard work. However, I knew that I wanted more for myself, and I was determined to excel in school to secure a comfortable office job with air conditioning.

The theme of 'African Americans & Labor' resonates deeply with me because hard work isn’t just something African Americans have done; it’s part of our story and our strength. It taught me resilience, humility, and pride. Even now, when I think about those long, hot days, I realize they helped prepare me for whatever challenges come my way.

Discovering Gallagher: A Perfect Fit

When I first learned about Gallagher, I knew little about the company beyond its name. However, a simple connection through my mother led me to explore the opportunities available at Gallagher.

“What drew me in and what keeps me here is the people. Gallagher hires good-hearted, positive individuals who genuinely want to see each other succeed. I’ve worked in places where negativity can drag a team down, but Gallagher doesn’t tolerate that. They focus on building a culture of encouragement, collaboration, and growth. This commitment to fostering a supportive environment aligns perfectly with my values and makes Gallagher feel like the right place for me to thrive.”

Growth and Support at Gallagher

Since joining Gallagher, I have been amazed by the level of support and resources available to me as a first-year employee. The company's approach to nurturing its interns and investing in their development has created a supportive environment where I can grow both personally and professionally. Through mentorship programs, engaging projects, and unique experiences, Gallagher has demonstrated its commitment to my success.

The internship program, in particular, has been incredibly beneficial to me as an HBCU graduate. It has introduced me to the world of insurance, provided valuable professional development opportunities, and allowed me to connect with fellow interns who have become cherished colleagues. The mentorship opportunities and networking events have further enhanced my experience, enabling me to expand my industry knowledge and build meaningful relationships.

Bringing HBCU Experiences to the Workplace

As an HBCU student and a member of the marching band, I have gained unique experiences that have shaped my understanding of work and community. The discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills I developed through my involvement in various ensembles have proven invaluable in my career. The ‘I'm ready!’ spirit that I bring to work every day is a direct result of the mindset I cultivated during my time in the band.

Attending an HBCU has also taught me the importance of giving back to my community. I have participated in numerous service projects, from cleanups to tutoring, and have learned that the work I do for my community is more valuable than any recognition or thanks I may receive. This understanding of the impact of genuine hard work on my community has become a driving force in my professional life.

Advice for HBCU Students and Graduates

To current HBCU students and recent graduates considering a career at Gallagher, my advice is simple: don't let your doubts hold you back. Gallagher values diversity and inclusion, and there are countless opportunities for growth and development. Take advantage of networking events and mentorship programs to connect with professionals and gain insights into the industry.

Remember that the skills and experiences you gained at your HBCU – resilience, leadership, and a strong sense of community – are valuable assets that align well with Gallagher's values. Embrace the challenges and rewards that come with working at Gallagher and be open to learning and adapting as you grow in your career.

One of the most meaningful moments in my journey was being asked to share my story for Black History Month. It’s an honor to have my voice heard and to represent both Gallagher and my HBCU community. Moments like these, along with being named ‘Intern of the Week’ during my first year, remind me that I’m not just an employee—I’m valued.

Gallagher doesn’t just say they care about diversity; they live it. They create spaces where people like me feel seen, supported, and celebrated. That’s why I’m excited about my future with Gallagher and proud to share my story.
