As an HBCU graduate and a proud member of the Gallagher community, I’ve found a place where my education, values, and aspirations align perfectly with the company’s culture and opportunities. Growing up in a small community, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by underfunded schools and the impact they can have on students' lives. This ignited my passion for education and community development, a passion that has been nurtured throughout my journey at Gallagher.

The HBCU Experience: Shaping Work and Community

My time at an HBCU played a crucial role in shaping my understanding of work and community. The experience was transformative, fostering leadership, resilience, and a commitment to service. HBCUs have a unique ability to foster a sense of belonging and support while preparing students to embrace their identity and make a positive impact on the world. The rigorous academic programs and emphasis on leadership instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep sense of responsibility to contribute to my community and workplace.

The HBCU experience also taught me the value of collaboration and engaging with diverse viewpoints. This preparation has been invaluable in navigating various professional settings and has allowed me to thrive in my career at Gallagher.

Gallagher's Support: Valuing HBCU Graduates

One of the most remarkable moments in my career at Gallagher was when I shared with my then Executive Life & Annuity Benefits Practice Leader, Luke Kaplan, about my involvement in saving my high school from closure in my community. Luke’s support extended far beyond professional recognition—he championed this achievement within and outside Gallagher, creating awareness that inspired mentorships and initiatives for the students.

This experience showed me that Gallagher values its employees beyond their work contributions. They genuinely care about the things we value outside of the workplace and support us in making a difference in our communities. It is this commitment to "supporting one another and believing in one another" (a tenet in The Gallagher Way) that makes me proud to be a part of Gallagher.

Gallagher's Resources and Partnerships: Empowering HBCU Graduates

Gallagher's partnerships with several historical advocacy efforts have been particularly meaningful to me and my family. This collaboration not only connects employees to significant cultural and historical initiatives but also reinforces the company’s dedication to diversity and inclusion.

As a parent of a graduating senior at Morehouse College, another HBCU, I am grateful for the opportunities this partnership provides. My son has been able to volunteer for events supporting the King Legacy Celebration, honoring the legacy of fellow Morehouse graduate, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Seeing my son continue our family’s HBCU legacy through such meaningful opportunities reminds me that Gallagher’s commitment to education and community extends to employees and their families.

Gallagher’s focus on diversity initiatives and professional growth has allowed me to participate in early talent recruitment efforts at HBCUs, particularly my alma mater, Grambling State University. This has been an invaluable experience for my own development and for future talent.

Bringing HBCU Experiences to the Workplace

One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my time at an HBCU was the importance of leadership through service. HBCUs instill a lifelong commitment to giving back and actively participating in community-building initiatives. This approach has been instrumental in expanding my confidence and developing skills that bridge the gap between community and business.

At Gallagher, I’ve been able to bring these experiences to life by highlighting African American excellence and contributing to a diverse and inclusive workplace culture. These efforts resonate with Gallagher’s unwavering commitment to navigating the future together.

As an African American female in a white male-dominated industry, I have faced challenges and systemic obstacles hence, African Americans & Labor for Black History Month 2025 resonates deeply with my journey in the workforce. However, the resilience and perseverance instilled in me through my HBCU education have been my guiding light. I am proud to stand as a testament to the significant contributions African Americans have made across industries and to create a path for others to follow.

Advice for HBCU Students and Graduates

To current HBCU students and recent graduates considering a career at Gallagher, I offer this advice: embrace the vast landscape of opportunities available within the company. Gallagher's position in the industry allows for flexibility and expansion into arenas that align with your aspirations, even in ways you may not have initially considered.

Additionally, face any challenges head-on. Transitioning from the challenging yet supportive environment of an HBCU to the competitive insurance industry can be daunting. But remember to draw upon the tenacity and resilience that your educational experience has instilled in you. Embrace the same veracity and diligence that has allowed your culture to overcome obstacles and walk through the doors that have been opened by those who came before you.

Reflections and Looking Ahead

As I reflect on my journey as an HBCU graduate at Gallagher, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and support I have received. Gallagher’s focus on diversity initiatives and professional growth has allowed me to participate in early talent recruitment efforts at HBCUs, particularly my alma mater, Grambling State University. This has been an invaluable experience for my own development and has enabled me to contribute to the success of future talent.

Gallagher's culture, rooted in ethical standards, integrity, and honesty, aligns seamlessly with the values I hold dear. The company's focus on career development, supportive initiatives for community participation, and continuous learning opportunities keeps me committed and engaged.

As I navigate the future together with Gallagher, I am excited to continue growing, learning, and making a positive impact in my workplace and community. I am grateful for the support and opportunities that Gallagher provides to HBCU graduates like me, and I look forward to being a part of this incredible organization for years to come.
