Finding Harmony: How Learning Piano Sparked My Growth

Earlier this year, I decided to take on something I’d dreamed about for years: learning the piano. It wasn’t just about picking up a new skill; it was about challenging myself, finding balance, and embracing the joy of lifelong learning. What started as a personal pursuit has turned into a journey that’s shaping how I think, work, and live.

Why Piano? A Lifelong Dream in Motion

When our family inherited a loved one’s piano, it felt like more than just receiving an instrument; it was the push I needed to finally begin. Four months later, I’m preparing for my first recital this December. Being a beginner again has been humbling and energizing. I’ve learned to celebrate small wins: mastering a few measures, playing a piece smoothly, or simply showing up to practice.

Music has always been part of my life: choir in school, drama productions in college, and now singing with my church choir. Learning piano feels like a natural extension of that passion. It challenges my mind, restores my energy, and reminds me why growth matters.

Lessons Beyond the Keys

This journey has taught me patience, focus, and perseverance, qualities that influence how I approach challenges at work. Progress doesn’t happen overnight; it comes from consistency, intention, and learning from mistakes. That same mindset helps me stay adaptable and solution-oriented as I navigate complex projects.

Playing piano has also helped me find balance. Life as a wife, mother, and full-time employee can be demanding. Setting aside time to play is my stress relief, a way to recharge and bring more creativity and energy into my work. It’s a reminder that investing in personal growth and wellbeing isn’t optional; it’s essential.

What Inspires Me to Keep Going

My motivation started with a lifelong desire to learn and the awe I’ve always felt watching pianists play. I wanted to challenge myself, support my daughters in their musical journeys, and show them it’s never too late to start something new.

One unexpected joy has been learning to read music. It feels like discovering a new language: one that turns symbols into emotion and rhythm. Decoding notes and creating melodies is both intellectually stimulating and creatively fulfilling.

Even on the busiest days, sitting at the piano centers me. Each note and song feels like a small accomplishment, a reminder that learning is a lifelong gift. A gift that strengthens my focus, resilience, and joy, both at home and at Gallagher.
