Looking back on my time in the Gallagher Sales Internship Program (GSIP), one thing stands out above all else: the opportunity to gain real-world experience that simply can't be replicated in a classroom.
The internship challenged me, pushed me beyond my comfort zone, and gave me valuable insights into the sales profession that continue to shape my career today.
A Challenge That Changed My Perspective
One of the most memorable experiences from my internship was participating in the National Sales Challenge. The competition brought together interns from across the country and challenged us to collaborate, think strategically, and present solutions under pressure. Working alongside peers from different offices exposed me to new ideas and perspectives while strengthening my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
The experience culminated in presenting our recommendations to Gallagher leaders and executives, an opportunity that was both exciting and rewarding. Looking back, the challenge pushed me outside my comfort zone and showed me what I was capable of achieving when I embraced new opportunities.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
If I had to describe my GSIP experience in one sentence, I would say:
The internship gave me real-world, meaningful experience that accelerated my professional growth and provided insights I couldn't have gained in a classroom setting."
The combination of hands-on projects, networking opportunities, mentorship, and exposure to real client work allowed me to apply what I had learned academically while developing skills that only come through experience. Personally, it taught me the importance of discipline, resilience, and stepping outside my comfort zone. The challenges I encountered throughout the program helped me build confidence and develop a clearer sense of direction for my future career.
Most importantly, the experience helped me understand how small actions: asking questions, seeking feedback, and taking initiative, can create meaningful growth over time.
What Does a Day in GSIP Look Like?
I would often start my day by connecting with producers in the office and meeting with my mentor to gain insights into their work, their clients, and their approach to sales. Throughout the day, I worked on projects and presentations, met with producers to learn about their career journeys, and participated in job shadowing opportunities. Every conversation provided a new perspective, and every project offered the chance to build practical skills that helped me better understand what a career in sales really looks like.
Technology and People Working Together
One thing I found particularly interesting during my internship was seeing how technology supports the work we do. I frequently used AI tools to help with research, organize information, and refine presentations, emails, and other communications. These tools helped me work more efficiently and allowed me to spend more time learning, building relationships, and developing professionally.
At the same time, I learned that technology is most effective when combined with human expertise. In a relationship-driven industry like sales, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to connect with people remain essential. The best results come when technology enhances the skills people already bring to the table.
Why GSIP Matters
The program gave me much more than an internship, it gave me exposure, confidence, and a foundation for my future career. I gained skills that continue to benefit me today as a Producer Associate. For students looking to challenge themselves, build meaningful connections, and gain practical experience from day one, GSIP provides an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover what's possible.
