Duties and tasks reflect variety and complexity underwriting workers compensation insurance applications within guidelines set forth by carrier partners.   The Underwriting Assistant will resolve routine questions and problems, and refers more complex issues to higher levels.  He/she works with all departments (teams) to gain knowledge of service and operational processes and procedures, which will be dominated by tasks to expedite the underwriting process, including data entry.

At an advanced level, the Underwriting Assistant may determine whether to accept, modify or decline a risk – both new and renewal business – through a comprehensive assessment of risk features, including classification codes, loss history, and risk engineering surveys, among others. 

The Underwriting Assistant will, over time, engage in communication via email, telephone, and occasionally in person with insured stakeholders, including insurance agents and risk managers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Monitoring email correspondence and other administrative tasks to expedite the underwriting process.
• Provide support to Underwriter(s) and/or Sr. Underwriter(s) analyzing and managing new and renewal workers compensation applicants, including risk selection and classification.
• Research and gather and organize information to provide recommendations to Underwriter and/or Sr. Underwriter.
• Fulfill agents’ requests for certificates of insurance issuance, loss runs, copies of policies, copies of invoicing, etc.
• Strong professional communication, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external stakeholders, including insurance agents, insurance carriers, and insured customer risk management teams.
• Support of general questions regarding renewal status, policy issuance, endorsement status, cancellation status, and billing inquires, commission questions, etc.)
• Reconciling and analyzing customer monthly billing reports.

Additional Qualifications:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills; time management.
• Strong ability to assess risk within underwriting guidelines.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Excel.

• Ability to multi-task, including working in a time-sensitive environment driven by expiration dates.

Required:
  • High school diploma; no experience required.

Desired:

  • 1 year related experience
