How You Will Make a Difference:

Working alongside the Manager, Underwriting and Claims Services, as class underwriter for Lloyd’s Disability, Personal Accident and Contingent Contract Protection insurances, you will be an integral part of a small yet, robust underwriting team with a high degree of authority granted under our Lloyd’s binding authorities.  Your medical underwriting confidence and skillset will be relied on heavily to make sound commercial underwriting decisions in respect of complex cases which, for the most part, would be considered uninsurable in traditional markets due to high limits, medical, lifestyle or risk history.  While building relationships with Lloyd’s Underwriters and other external underwriting consultants in complementary product lines, your expertise will be called upon to assist in overseeing and refining our underwriting and policy issue procedures.



We Will Rely On You To:

  • Manage a portfolio of inforce business, providing timely renewal quotes and overseeing the renewal process from quote to issuance.
  • Review new business applications and recommend medical and financial underwriting strategy.
  • Review incoming requirements and correspondence, keep clear and concise underwriting notes and recommend appropriate next steps to Customer Service Associates.
  • Refer cases to external underwriting consultants as required while managing underwriting costs.
  • Make sound and competitive underwriting decisions to ensure profitability of portfolio.
  • Consult with sales team to ensure new business quotes are appropriate and reflect an aggressive, but sound assessment of risk.
  • Deliver exceptional service and expertise while answering claims and customer service queries.
  • Participate in the building and maintenance of the HM Special Risks Underwriting Manual.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and developments in underwriting and underwriting technology.

What Drives Your Success:

  • Minimum 5 years of Disability and/or Life underwriting experience.
  • Strong medical background including the ability to summarize APS and other underwriting information into critical key points.
  • Exceptional analytical, judgement, problem-solving, time management and decision-making skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven numeracy and statistical skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of insurance policies and ability to relate policy provisions to the loss exposures.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
  • A high degree of proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity.



What Would Put Us Over The Top!

  • French verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a Lloyd’s Coverholder operation.
  • Advanced degree or insurance designations.
  • An ability to interpret EKG readings.
  • Experience in GSI underwriting.
  • An established network of advisors in the individual life or living benefits space working in the high net worth and/or business owner markets.
  • Superior knowledge of Canadian life and disability products, sales strategies and the financial services industry.
  • Interest in learning to underwrite new product lines which may include P&C.
