Data Services is the foundation activity in the provision of solutions to Business Intelligence needs. The source data required for eventual Business Intelligence solutions requires transportation, formatting and loading into data repositories before it can be further refined into information in order to fulfil BI requirements.


The Data Services Manager role is to manage this activity through the construction, delivery and support of Data Services whilst adhering to GGB-UK data principles, corporate standards and industry best practice. Further, the role supports the Head of Data and Information Services in the delivery of a GGB-UK data strategy and architecture that will help to set and steer data and information services ensuring consistency in approach across GGB-UK organisation.

Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Works alongside the Information Services Manager and GGB-UK BI communities to support the delivery of their BI requirements ensuring that the information provided enhances business decision making capabilities.
  • Member of GGB-UK BI centre of excellence, providing expert consultancy on data and business intelligence to BI communities
  • Creation and Maintenance of data service development framework and standards 
  • Accountable for the delivery of Data Services, resolution of Service disruptions or requests for Service change 
  • Leading the strategic design and maintenance of Data services
  • Management of on and off-shore data service and build teams in delivery of services, development of new solutions and maintenance of existing solutions. 
  • Main contact for the inclusion of new and changed D&I services into production support 
  • Accountable for the management of respective remedy queues to keep outstanding tickets to a minimum
  • Works closely with the Data Solutions Architect to provide Solution and Data architectural Quality Assurance for all data solutions both BAU and project based
  • Works closely with the Data Architecture/Strategy and Information Service functions to co-ordinate and release all change and provide a point of contact for escalations and queries in terms of Data Services
  • Works closely with the Data Programme Manager/Project Managers to assess project changes and assist in defining resource plans to deliver changes.
  • Continuously seeks improvement in processes through the assessment of team activity and carrying out R&D exercises including proof of concepts for new capability development in support of Information and data services
  • Monitor code practices, analyse execution plans, and recommend methods of re-factoring inefficient code to meet coding standards.
  • Ensures that Team Technology milestones, goals and  behaviour standards of Team Technology are met whilst adhering to agreed budgets Development of the metadata needed to drive the ETL frameworks
  • Keeps abreast of technological advancements in order to identify potential improvements to current solutions.  
  • Carry out duties following  internal policies and procedures in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, good governance and Gallagher’s shared values, in particular, putting clients at the heart of our business.

  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent
Technical Knowledge:
  • Strong experience of the Microsoft BI Stack, SQL2008/2012/2014/2016 (2017 an advantage), SSIS, TSQL SSAS.  SSRS would be a bonus
  • Knowledge of visualisation tools especially PowerBI and non-Microsoft tools such as Qlikview, Qliksense, Tableau an advantage
  • Excellent data analysis skills 
  • Thorough knowledge of design and integration principles for complex, heterogeneous databases, data transportation and data modelling.
  • Knowledge of Insurance industry 
  • Industry data standards and architectures 
  • Requirements, data analysis and data modelling experience in a data warehouse environment within a large organisation, preferably within the Insurance/Financial markets
  • Strong knowledge of current industry practices and toolsets
  • Excellent communicator
  • Strong relationship management 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to resolve problems in a professional manner, lead working groups, negotiate and create consensus.
  • Ability to translate complex technical terminology, concepts and issues in terms understandable to technical and non-technical management and resources staff.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
