Position Summary: 


Supervises all internal processes and procedures related to the centralized accounts payable/receivable function in addition to the day-to-day operations over a team of support staff. 


The Accounts Payable Leader reports directly to our Senior Accounting Leader within Gallagher's Accounting Center.  This AP Leadership position will be responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Onshore and Offshore for Gallagher's largest payable organization.  This work spans across multiple Gallagher divisions and covers carrier premium payables, broker payables, and client payables.  The role functions as a thought leader and contributor to ongoing accounting projects and process improvement initiatives, including the direct leadership of a team of analysts.  This position leads various AP operations, oversees staff onshore and owns the results both onshore and offshore.  Additionally, the leader identifies trends in data and implements business process improvements that will lead to a positive impact on operational effectiveness.  As an AP Leader, the role must effectively collaborate internally and externally, across all accounting areas, through various functional teams, with our producing branch and service staff, plus carriers and brokers. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Leads, coaches, develops, evaluates, and monitors staff to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Develops and monitors the controls to ensure timely and accurate reconciliation, payment, formal reporting and compliance to financial policies and SOX requirements.
  • Analyze, research, and resolve complex problems; reviewing and implementing process efficiencies.

Additional Considerations:  

  • Responsible for managing day-to-day workflow of a team or work group of accounting professionals.
  • Provides training and guidance to lower-level accounting personnel.
  • May be responsible for higher level accounting work while direct reports perform more elementary tasks.
  • Resolves complex problems, oversees calculating, posting, verifying, and typing duties to obtain and record financial data for use in maintaining accounting and statistical record, sand ease workloads during periods of peak volume.
  • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • May report to a Manager or a member of Senior Management within the finance and accounting function.
  • May manage accounting clerks, accounts payable/receivable specialists and accounting coordinators.
  • Good working knowledge of the insurance brokerage business.
  • Solid background in the use of technology, particularly applications specific to the department/area.
  • Will be responsible for higher level accounting work and audit remediation tasks.
  • Demonstrates skill in leading and managing professional personnel including the delegation of responsibility, motivation, and development of professional skills and attitudes.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Provides leadership to daily operations with the ability to evaluate impact of change workload and make adjustments as needed to meet specified deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently in setting priorities to ensure that responsibilities are action in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Responsible for the oversight of both the offshore and onshore teams to ensure processes are managed according to procedure along with holding the team accountable and educate on areas of improvement.
  • Works closely with the Acquisition and Integration team to ensure a smooth transition and accurate handoff to payables.
  • Provides exceptional customer service in explaining and responding to questions received from front office operations and other accounting departments.
  • Reviews and ensure accounting procedures are appropriately documented, assists in the on-going documentation and makes recommendations to increase effectiveness and accuracy.
  • Maintains control over accounting transactions to ensure integrity of all financial sub-systems and interfaces.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff within the accounting department, with other office personnel, and with outside departments.
  • Works closely with Treasury concerning daily banking activity such as wires, ACH, and checks.
  • Skill in analyzing information, practices or systems to identify problems, identify patterns, trends and relationships, formulate logical and objective conclusions, recognize alternatives and their implications, and prepare reports.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of computerized general ledger and subsidiary systems with an understanding of the flow of information and maintain the integrity of general ledgers with the ability to recommend enhancements and modifications as necessary.
  • Ability to adjust working hours and, if necessary, work overtime to meet the needs of the office and reporting deadlines.
  • Written communication skills to prepare clear and concise correspondence at a level appropriate for the intended audience.
  • Manages the development and preparation of internal reports for management.
  • Reviews and approves journal entries.


  • Associates degree
  • 4+ years general accounting experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Working competency in utilizing agency management systems.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.  


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or Insurance Designation.
  • 7+ years of supervisory experience.
  • 5+ years analyst or similar accounting experience.
  • 2+ years of insurance brokerage accounting experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word and Presentation.
  • Agency management system experience strongly desired.
  • Occasional travel.
